Anxiety
Anxiety is something we all experience and, in the right moments, can help keep us safe. However, sometimes anxieties take over and become a consistent and difficult part of daily life, holding you back from experiences you used to enjoy.
It’s easy to find yourself caught in a cycle of avoiding the things that make you anxious, but the more you avoid it, in the longer term the more the anxiety grows. Have you ever noticed that you;
- Worry about things and that worry won’t go away?
- Overthink everything and usually expect the worst to happen?
- Find yourself avoiding people, places and experiences?
Anxiety is generally rooted in a fear of something that hasn’t happened yet. When experiencing periods of anxiety you may notice different emotional, physical and behavioural responses. In counselling we can work through all of these, explore their causes and give you tools to manage it.
How can Therapy help?
A certain amount of anxiety is helpful but when that anxiety becomes difficult to control and impacts your ability to live your life it is no longer helpful. Anxiety is often thoughts and feelings about something you are worried will happen in the future. Through therapy, together we can understand what that looks like, what your triggers are and the root cause of the anxiety.
When working with anxiety in therapy there are a number of techniques that can be used to help. Techniques such as;
- Identifying and challenging unhelpful thought processes using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Practical tools and techniques to manage when anxiety is high.
- Psychoeducation – understanding what anxiety is and what causes it
For those who have questions or are anxious about starting therapy I offer a free 20 minute telephone consultation to discuss your needs, how I can help and answer any questions you may have. If you would like to start your healing journey, contact me to book an introductory call.
